COVID-19 UPDATES

Updated: April 20, 2024

All listed travel programs are schedule to run.

We have been running programs continuously since Summer 2021. We continue to provide the excellent experiences our students have come to expect from us while maintaining excellent health and safety standards.

HOW WE ARE KEEPING YOU SAFE

We are using the following safety standards:

  • Requiring all students test for COVID within 2 calendar days of departing for Belize. If students test positive, they must report the result to CELA Belize and follow the CDC guidance for staying home.
  • Recommending that all students and faculty be vaccinated for COVID-19
  • Following US CDC protocols for isolating students or staff if they get COVID
  • Adhering to local health requirements related to masking, testing, and isolating in each program country and at each program site

COVID VACCINES RECOMMENDED, NOT REQUIRED

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended but not required for any CELA Belize programs.

WHAT IF I TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 RIGHT BEFORE MY PROGRAM?

Get well first! You must let us know if you test positive. Next we will ask you to follow the CDC guidance for when to stay home if you have COVID. As of April 20, 2024, that means being fever-free for 24 hours and with your symptoms improving for a full 24 hours before you join the group.

If you aren’t able to join your program on time, we’ll help you make special accommodations for arriving late, which may mean changing your flight and/or making new in-country travel arrangements to get to your program site. These changes will be at your own expense. We encourage you to purchase travel insurance that would cover these costs and/or cancellation for medical reasons including COVID.

If you are not well enough to travel and you do not want to join the group late, you will not be able to attend your program. By cancelling within 35 days of your program start, you would not be eligible for a tuition refund. That’s why travel insurance that covers cancellation for medical reasons is strongly recommended.

WHAT IF I GET SICK DURING MY PROGRAM?

Every program has 24/7 staff to help you get medical attention if you get sick. It’s important that you have appropriate medical insurance in case you need medical treatment abroad.

If you test positive for COVID during your program (and you don’t have proof of recent recovery), you will need to isolate for 24 hours until you are fever-free and your symptoms are improving. Then you can join the group and we will ask you to mask for 5 days.

Read the latest US CDC guidance on what to do if you have COVID or other respiratory viruses

There may be additional requirements based on the rules of your program country or host. COVID-19 regulations continue to change in each country and could change again before your program begins or during your program.

WHAT IF SOMEONE IN MY GROUP TESTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 DURING THE PROGRAM?

If someone in your group gets sick with COVID or other respiratory viruses, you will be required to test for COVID if you are symptomatic.

Because most program housing is shared with 3 or more people, you may share a room with a student who has recently tested positive for COVID if they are fever-free and their symptoms are improving.

There may be additional requirements based on the rules of your program country or host.
